My Cup Runneth Over
It does indeed, always!
A dear friend of mine, Jonathan Mitchell, has written a translation of the New Testament[1] which, in just one of his several descriptions in the Introduction, says that he …”adopted the philosophy of Kenneth Wuest, who said that in his translation he would use as many English words as it takes to give the Greek meaning,” and it does indeed contain expanded and amplified meanings of many of the words in the Greek New Testament and also provides multiple renderings of some phrases and sentences, “…where those are viable.” It has been a source that has freed me from many literal meanings that I grew up with.”
One example is Matthew 22:37: “…You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind” which Jesus was quoting from Deuteronomy 6:5 and which was taught to me as a command. I learned it is a beautiful promise of God -- as Jonathan renders it: “You will continue loving [the] Lord [= Yahweh], your God, in union with your whole heart’ and within the midst of the core of your being, and in union with your whole soul – and within the midst of your entire soul-life, and in union with your whole intellectual capacity – and within the midst of your whole thinking process and comprehension. [Deut.6:5]” [2]
He also has translated passages from the Old Testament and my favorite was/is Psalm 23, especially verses 3 and 5 as God “…restored my self-life, turned about my inner being”…” and “…You anoint my head with olive oil, and Your cup is progressively and continuously intoxicating – as the best, most excellent wine.”[3]
